Fine art photography is about light, composition and timing

Artist’s Statement

Fine art photography is about light, composition and timing. It is how these elements come together and are captured that continues to challenge me as a photographer.

For those of you who have visited my website previously, it has been updated with new images taken in 2005 and early 2006. My wife Susan and I visited Northern New Mexico in the summer of 2005 and I visited Mexico, Belize, Guatemala and Honduras in early 2006. Two new sections of this website display several of the many images I took on these two trips. If you are interested in viewing additional images of these trips, please contact me.

I have also been exploring new locations in the San Francisco Bay Area as well as returning to old favorites. As a result, I have added images taken in the Marin Headlands, Berkeley Hills and the Sunol Regional Wilderness.

I was fortunate to have met the late Galen Rowell several times. He influenced generations of outdoor photographers through his images, books, articles and workshops. His help, advice and encouragement will always be important to me.

My mother Barbara Spitz is a nationally known printmaker and photographer. Her website is www.bspitzimages.com.

I’m a Nikon photographer. Many of these images have been taken with a Nikon digital D-70. I also use a Nikon F-100 and a variety of lenses and filters. The Fujichrome Velvia transparencies have been digitized on a Nikon Coolscan ED-V scanner. If you have any questions about the images, please feel free to send me an email.
